Constitution Day 2011

Source
Today is Constitution Day. On September 17, 1787, the thirty-ninth and final signature was placed on this document, making it the Law of our land. If you are interested, here is a site which gives all the names and short biographies of the signers.

I've always liked the form of the Constitution, with the words "We the People" taking such a prominent place. It should serve as a reminder, and I believe that was the intention, to all Americans that we have a responsibility in our government. If we all knew our Constitution as we should, perhaps our country would not be in such a mess today.

Many people don't want to be "bothered" with politics. Some think that what happens in Washington "doesn't affect them". I recently watched the HBO "John Adams" series, which was fabulous by the way, and acquired a great appreciation and love for Abigail Adams.

She had this to say about politics: "And do women not live politics, John Adams? When I go to the cupboard, and I find no coffee, no sugar, no pins, and no meat, am I not living politics?..."

Politics affects every aspect of our lives, whether we want to admit it, or not.
Incandescent light bulbs will soon be a thing of the past. Politics. The price of gas. Politics. The price we pay for food. Politics. Unemployment. Politics. Have you seen the list of how many new taxes have been instituted in the last 100 years? Check this out, and then tell me that politics do not affect our lives. The attempt to remove God out of every single public place. Politics. (Contrary to what some believe, the words "separation of church and state" are not found in the Constitution. Amendment I: "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances."

How well do you know the Constitution? I've read it through a couple of times, but there's still a lot I don't know. If you want to take a quiz on your knowledge of the Constitution, you can go here. There's only five questions to answer. (I got three right.)

So, on this 224th anniversary of the signing of our Constitution, I hope you will find and copy and read this document, and remember that many people have shed blood to preserve the freedoms that we have.

Be an informed citizen. Don't allow yourself to be a useful idiot.

"I do solemnly swear that I will support the Constitution of the United States...and the Constitution of this State...and defend them against all enemies, foreign and domestic, so help me God."

  2. Hi Darlene! What an excellent post today. You are so right - we should all be involved more, especially women who, certainly in this country, didn't have the vote for so long, and women fought so hard to get that vote for us. Lots of people are so apathetic about politics today, because they just think that we can't trust anyone, but that's just a cop out really as far as I am concerned. Anyway, on a lighter note, congratulations on being number 3 in the Mini Skirt contest. Now, remind me, who was number 1 again??!! Hee Hee! Have a lovely weekend, and it was such a fun party, wasn't it?

  5. I love the Constitution. It's hard for me to imagine how anyone can read that document and give us the kinds of laws we get now. And to misquote it so egregiously.

I'm sad for our country and wish I could just force everyone to love and understand the Constitution.

And that bit about church and state and religion? Yeah, I think that's one of the misquoted parts of the entire document and I am so glad religious folk are FINALLY starting to fight back against our ever-decreasing liberties.

  8. I wish more of us were informed citizens, maybe then governments would actually have to be aware of the voters and our views. They love dumbing us down, wake up and take notice of what is really going on in the world people.
